Adapting and reinventing asian classics for the stage

Chong Tze Chien

What are the considerations and cultural sensitivities when one is reinventing or adapting Asian classics? In his latest endeavour, playwright/director Chong Tze Chien embarks on a 2 year process adapting an Indian classic, tapping into his wealth of experience responding to and reinventing traditional forms/myths/Asian classics in his 25 years of practice. By marrying a myriad of approaches, training methods, disciplines and techniques, Tze Chien directs a multicultural cast consisting of actors from both contemporary and traditional practice. This sharing will shed light on his thought process and practice.

Chong Tze Chien is a core member of The Finger Players and an award-winning Playwright / Director. Some of the awards he has won include the Singapore Dramatist Award and The Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards. He also writes feature films and for television channels. Tze Chien has two collections of plays published containing his critically acclaimed plays including Charged, one of the top ten plays of all time in Singapore as cited by The Business Times. For his contributions to Singapore Theatre, he was awarded the Young Artist Award by Singapore's National Arts Council in 2006.
