SINGAPORE - Itneg weaving or habing Itneg was featured in the 3rd Southeast  Asian Art Forum 2022 launched by the Institute of Southeast Asian Arts or ISEAA at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts or NAFA in Singapore on August 4 to 5, 2022.

According to the Philippine Embassy in Singapore, Itneg weaving was highlighted through the contemporary dance performance 'Kathabi' - 'katha' means creation while 'weaving' means sewing.

Kathabi is a multidisciplinary collaboration between NAFA, University of the Philippines or UP and the Revival Dye Cooperative of the province of Abra where they also conducted competent coordination with the leaders of the indigenous tribes in the said province in the Philippines.

Dancers Pia Angela Custudio and Sabril Amin brought to life the said Kathabi dance that shows how the weaving of the Itneg tribe began. Other staff, students and alumni of the NAFA dance and fashion departments participated in this dance theater performance.

NAFA also contacted the leaders of the Itneg tribe in the Philippines to develop the choreography and create the costume design of the performers using traditional woven cloth including the tie-dye patterns of the said ethnic group. The musicians mixed tribal and contemporary instruments in creating music for the Kathabi dance.

In the third edition of the 2-day hybrid forum, emphasis was placed on the various ways in which art can be the foundation of sustainable practices in Southeast Asia, even the importance of responsible global citizenship.
