Why Eco-Đi? will present a compelling case to deploy visual art as a powerful social intervention tool for environmental causes. The talk will trace 5 of my works that lead to the birth of ECO-ĐI in the span of 11 years. Beginning with the video Waltz of the Machine Equestrians (Singapore Biennale 2013), the subsequent development of the other 4 works Serpents' Tails Morning, Serpents Tails and Contemporary Saint Giongs eventually lead to ECO-ĐI. Presented in a fluid format with video and pictures, I will make a case for an ambitious but very doable project that is set to bear fruit in 2022. Combining 6 disciplines in one, ECO-ĐI will bring Lao Tzu's message to all environmental-conscious people on the planet and keep it going for years to come. Embodying Conceptual Art, Sculptural Relief, Wearable Art, Performance Art, Intervention Art, and the Art of Advertising, ECO-ĐI is a winning formula since it can influence the public gently and therefore can do the most difficult things: changing their habits for the better. As they walk with ECO-ĐI, billions of Lao Tzu messages sculpted on sand around the world will create a big impact and a planet with less trash. “Good Travelers Leave No Traces”. As citizens of the world traveling through life sharing the same spaceship Earth, let's do it as much as possible to help our future generation.
Uudam Tran Nguyen was born in Kontum, Vietnam. Initially trained as a sculptor at the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Art University, he went on to pursue a Bachelor of Art at UCLA and Master of Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He now lives and works in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Working with video, performance, photography, sculpture and new media, Nguyen's playfully provocative practice is today one of the leading lights of Vietnamese contemporary art. Nguyen has exhibited internationally, including but not limited to: Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane; Singapore Art Museum, Singapore; Asia Society, New York; Whitechapel Gallery, London; Jewish Museum, New York; Bildmuseet Museum, Sweden; RISD Museum, Rhode Island. Nguyen is a co-founder of the experimental art magazine XEM. His art is represented in public and private collections such as Asia Society, NYC; Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane; Kadist Art Foundation, San Francisco amongst other.
